You either love it or hate it: Ylang Ylang

Ylang Ylang helps temporarily switching off your nervous system, particularly when you are struggling, your anxiety and worry is contributing. Ylang Ylang can be an important ally for those peaks of emotion, including panic and anger, helping to bring us down from that fight or flight cascade.

In some cases of insomnia, using oils which try and bring more balances to the days, smoothing out some of those emotional peaks, can make a real difference to how the nervous system and brain is come bedtime.

The Aroma

Steam distilled from flowers of Ylang Ylang trees, Ylang Ylang essential oil has a sweet, romantic aroma and moisturizing properties, making it a key ingredient in many luxury skin and hair products. Ylang Ylang is often classified as a heart note because it emerges just as the top notes begin to dissipate. Add it to your daily moisturizer, a steamy bath, or home- made hair mask for a relaxing, luxuriously aromatic at-home spa day.

Love it or Hate it?

Ylang ylang smells exotic, deep and floral, the extract has top notes of jasmine and neroli, a fruity facet reminiscent of banana, paired with creamy custard and tangy rubber. One either loves it or hates it, as the exotic smell sometimes will drive people away, while those who are attracted to its deep floral scent love it deeply and found it relaxing.

There are several compounds in ylang ylang which contribute to its rich and distinctive fragrance. Most notable is linalool, a natural alcohol whose pleasant, floral and fresh fragrance is very popular in aromatherapy, and used to attain relaxation and combat feelings of anxiety, promote relaxation and improve the quality of sleep.

*Linalool (a monoterpenol) is a constituent which exists in many of the essential oils, it is an anxiolytic and sedative compound

Tackling your Day to Day Stress

Ylang Ylang offers a similar profile to petitgrain, helping those whose nervous system is struggling to switch off, particularly when anxiety and worry is contributing. Known (and demonstrated) as an oil with the ability to reduce blood pressure and heart rate, Ylang Ylang can be an important ally for those peaks of emotion, including panic and anger, helping to bring us down from that fight or flight cascade.

It's ability to reduce feelings of stress has also been well documented. Ylang Ylang is an especially useful anti-stress oil because it can help people feel more mentally alert, a well as feeling calmer. Used through the day this can lead to an individual feeling in a better frame of mind to deal with day to day stressors. Come the evening, Ylang ylang's calming relaxing properties can then help the nervous system shift into parasympathetic control.
