Naturalice Garden: 5 Important Tips to Prevent Face Mask Side Effects

Everybody's skin has become more sensitive these days due to the fact of wearing face masks all day long, which prevents the skin from breathing itself, it also makes it difficult for the skin to maintain its protective power. Face masks are a blessing and a curse at the same time. They protect our health but can damage the skin. Prolonged mask wearing can cause discomfort or irritation of the skin on your face.

Face mask creates a close environment that increases the amount of moisture trapping between your face and the mask. When wearing a mask for hours, these excessive moisture can lead to breakouts and skin irritation on the nasal bridge, chin or cheeks. If you are prone to outbreaks like acne, rosacea, perioral dermatitis, eczema, or allergic contact dermatitis, your condition could be worsened by prolonged face mask wearing.

In this article, I have summarized 5 simple tips to help protect your skin from the damages that those masks can cause on your face.

1. Wear the right mask

The right choice of material is important when buying a mask. To reduce skin problems, look for masks that offer the following:

  • A snug, but comfortable fit - If the mask feels too tight or slides around on your face, it can irritate your skin

  • At least two layers of fabric

  • Soft, natural, and breathable fabric, such as cotton, on the inside layer that rests against your skin

The fabric is so important. Find a mask using softer and skin-friendly material will prevent rubbing over to your fragile skin especially around the cheek areas. If you use a cloth mask, avoid synthetic fabrics, such as nylon, polyester, and rayon on the the layer that rests against your skin, as they are more likely to irritate your skin and cause breakouts.

Cotton is a breathable fabric and is softer on the skin. It will therefore be relatively non-irritating for the skin and suitable for most people.

2. Keep your mask clean

A dirty mask counteracts any other prevention strategies you have done. If you use a cloth mask, be sure to wash it prior to wearing the first time. A washing machine or hand washing should suffice to properly wash a cloth mask.

Also, wash your cloth mask after each use. Washing it removes oils and skin cells that collect inside the mask, which could lead to a skin problem. After washing your mask, check its shape. If a mask no longer fits snugly (and comfortably), it is less protective.

Face masks with a hygienic production and packaging line, meaning good quality control, can ensure that your face is in direct contact with a clean surface, which is crucial to maintain healthy skin.

3. Take a 15-minute mask break every 4 hours

Try this and you will see that this really helps save your skin. If possible, remove your mask in a safe place away from other people (and not infringing any legal requirements imposed by your government) for 15 minutes every 4 hours, and after washing your hands.

4. Setup your daily skincare routine

A daily skincare routine both morning and evening can help you nourish your skin, strengthen the immunity of your skin and its underlying face muscle, boosting its metabolism and collagen growth, as well as a good chance to enable you to identify any changes to your skin condition, to enable you to take precautions and remedial actions before its too late.

The most important thing you can do to prevent breakouts and irritation on your skin is to keep your skin clean and well moisturized. Before and after wearing your mask, gently cleanse to remove oil, dirt, makeup and bacteria. Next, apply a natural ingredient, gentle, fragrance-free moisturizer to your skin.

Cleansing - Cleanse your face daily but be gentle with your skin. A soft and fragrance-free cleaning protocol can prevent risky allergy. Use natural ingredient skincare product can prevent unnecessary stress on your skin. Also, do not over-exfoliate your face, too much exfoliation and peeling will damage the protective layer of your skin which will cause your skin to drying out and breakouts easily.

Moisturizing - Even acne-prone people needs a moisturizer. Especially if you're wearing a mask, you want to make sure you skin barrier is in the best shape possible, which means it's both balanced and hydrated. Applying a natural ingredient moisturizer before and after wearing a mask can add a protective layer to your skin. Moisturizer can prevent problems, especially if you have dry or sensitive skin. When selecting moisturizer, try to avoid chemically formulate, or highly preserved product, use natural ingredient product as much as possible, and when follow this guide based on your skin types:

  • Oily skin (or when weather is hot, humid): Gel moisturizer

  • Normal or combination skin: Lotion

  • Dry to very dry skin: Cream

* If you have acne or tend to break out, use a gel moisturizer.

To get the most benefit from a moisturizer, look for ingredients like ceramides and hyaluronic acid, and one without unnecessary addictive and chemicals and which fits your skin type.

5. Skip makeup under your Mask

Try to skip the makeup when wearing a mask. The increased humidity under the mask, the oil in your cosmetics, and any excess sebum produced by your pores sit inside the lining of the mask, which not only soil the mask, but also increases irritation and leading to an increase in clogged pores and breakouts.

If you're used to wearing makeup on your entire face, it's time to shift your application to only what's above eye level, to avoid any potentially irritating or pore-clogging ingredients under the mask-covered skin, particularly foundations and concealer with heavy formulations. Remember to use a plant based oil makeup remover to remove your make up and before cleansing.
